What is Mould?

The word “mould” describes a suite of fungi that act to break down varous organic material. They’re closely related to the mushrooms that you put on your salad, only a lot more ubiquitous.

Moulds are found everywhere and there are thousands of different species. Like all fungi, moulds derive their energy not from photosynthesis, but from organic material. To get at this material, moulds secrete enzymes from the tips of their hyphae (think something like tree roots) that act to break down complex molecules into more basic molecules (like sugars etc). In this way, moulds act to decompose cellulose and other tough to digest materials.

Some Common Moulds and Fungi

Histoplasma capsulatum causes histoplasmosis, a mild fever and malaise, has affected more than 40 million people in North America. Most often found in pigeon roosts, bat caves and old buildings where moisture and excreta accumulate.

Crypotococcus neoformans causes cryptococcosis (lung infection). It is found in pigeon excrement and when dry the pathogen becomes airborne. It is a contributing factor in most sick building syndrome cases.

Mucor sp. A somewhat rare and opportunistic pathogen which can infect the lungs and other locations. Spores will germinate and produce mycelial growth.

Rhizopus sp. An opportunistic pathogen which can infect the lungs and other locations. Spores will germinate and produce mycelial growth.

Absidia sp. Can invade upper respiratory tract, produce spores and mycelia growth.

Stachybotrys sp. A recently identified fungal allergen. Is a contributing factor to Sick Building Syndrome. Produces spores and can result in mycelium growth.
